Testo Originale:

The number of inhabitants in Sweden is assumed to be much the same as it is today, namely about 8 million.

The production of goods and services in the country is assumed to be twice the level of today. It should be noted that the Swedish level is already one of the highest in the world. A change in the relations between the production of goods and services is of course not unlikely, but it does not greatly affect the gross features of the energy system.

The energy demand per produced unit is assumed to be reduced; abundant technical possibilities for such a reduction already exist. Current energy prices are already so high as to lead to a more efficient use of energy, and further increases will presumably occur. In industry, the specific energy demand is assumed to be 80 percent of today's, which is in accordance with the official Swedish prognosis for the year 1995.

We further assume that in the service sector the energy demand per unit produced is half of today's; this includes transport of people and goods, commerce, government services such as hospitals, education etc. Thus the transport sector's energy use per kilometer has been halved. The energy use in other services consists largely of space heating and there are considerable possibilities for more efficient energy use. Housing is treated separately.

We have also assumed a 40 percent increase in the number of apartments, an extension of the present official prognosis. Using increased insulation etc in newly produced houses for the rest of the century and conservation measures in presently existing constructions, the specific energy demand may be reduced by 30 percent on the average.

With the outline of economic activity sketched out, the final demand for energy in gross terms is shown in Table 1.

We have not introduced the concept of standard of living into this picture. It depends too much on how different individuals value different goods and services. However, the level of pro- duction assumed would permit everyone to have the material standard now enjoyed by the top 10 percent of the population.

In Table 2, we present a breakdown of the energy use in Sweden into different categories of energy quality. The numbers refer to the energy balance of 1971 and for our discussion we have assumed that there is no significant change of social structure in Sweden between 1971 and 2015, leaving the dis- tribution between different sectors almost unchanged. However, corrections have been made for increased efficiency in space heating.
