Giorgio Benedek (GB) was born on February 4, 1941 in Bologna (Italy). He is presently senior (retired) professor at Università di Milano-Bicocca, Dipartimento di Scienza dei Materiali, Milano, Italy. He is Doctor in Physics since 1965 (University of Milano) and obtained his University Teaching Qualification in Solid State Physics (1970, University of Milano)
Career: GB has been Researcher at the National Research Council, Research Unit in Milano (1967-1986); Reader (Professore Incaricato) of Physics at the Università di Milano (1970-1984) and Full Professor of Structure of Matter (1986-2011) at Univ. di Milano, then Università di Milano-Bicocca.
Experience: GB has been Visiting Scientist at the Université de Liège, Belgium (1974/1975); Visiting Scientist at Max Planck Institut FKF, Stuttgart, Germany (1978-1979); Visiting Professor, University of Virginia (1981); International Franqui Chair Professor at Facultés Univ. Notre Dame de la Paix, Namur, Belgium (1985); Alexander von Humboldt Senior Scientist at Max Planck Institut SF, Göttingen, Germany (1990-1991; re-invitations: 2004/2005 and 2012/13); Ikerbasque Visiting Professor (2009/2010) and DIPC Visiting Professor (2010-present) at the Donostia International Physics Center, San Sebastián, Basque Country, Spain.

Research areas: Physics of low-dimensional systems (both theory and expt.): surface dynamics, surface phonon spectroscopy, clusters and cluster assembled materials, theory of carbon structures, physics of supersonic atomic and cluster jets. Physics of quantum solids: discovery and study of the geyser effect in the vacuum expansion of quantum solids, superfluidity of He droplets, quantum diffusion in solid helium.
